Business Process Improvement Training for Small Businesses

Business Process Improvement Training for Small Businesses

Learn process improvement methods and tools through practical team training

Delays, repeated questions and inconsistent ways of working can make everyday operations harder to manage. Owners, managers and teams need practical skills to understand how work flows, investigate problems and make informed improvements.

Acumen’s business process improvement training teaches your team methods and tools for mapping processes, investigating causes, clarifying responsibilities and developing practical SOPs or checklists. Participants learn an approach they can use across suitable processes in your business. To make the learning easier to apply, they practise on one workflow from your company during the training.

Based in London, Ontario, Acumen works with your company as one private group. Online or on-site delivery is agreed before booking.

Learn skills you can use across your business

The selected workflow gives participants a concrete setting to practise each method, ask questions and receive feedback. They learn when and how to use the tools, then begin applying them to a real example. The same approach can support later improvements in other workflows, adapted to their context and complexity.

Who this training is for

The program is designed for a group of 4–8 people from your company. Participants may include owners, managers, supervisors, employees or others involved in managing and improving processes. Your company chooses who attends; we can offer guidance based on your size, structure and learning goals. It can help when:

  • Routine questions repeatedly return to the owner or manager.

  • Tasks arrive without the information the next person needs.

  • Roles, approvals or exception handling are unclear.

  • Different employees follow different methods for the same recurring task.

For practical exercises, we agree a manageable workflow from your business, such as client onboarding, scheduling, quote approval or a project handoff. It provides a shared learning example; participants do not all need to perform that work themselves.

How the training works

Before training, we discuss your learning goals and choose a workflow for practice. The first part teaches process mapping, problem definition, cause investigation and responsibility mapping. Participants then apply these methods to the company example.

The second part teaches how to turn findings into an SOP or checklist, test routine and exception scenarios, explain its use and plan a measured trial. Participants practise these steps on the chosen workflow. A follow-up reviews application of the learning and questions arising from use. Your company decides which changes to approve and implement.

Methods and tools your team will learn

Participants receive editable templates they can reuse in other suitable workflows. During the exercises, they begin a workflow map, a responsibility table, an SOP or checklist draft and a trial plan for the selected example. These working drafts support the learning; further work and company approval may be needed before live use.

Format and time commitment

The training can be delivered as two three-hour sessions or as a single-day program, depending on your company’s scheduling needs.

Separate sessions are normally scheduled 7–14 days apart, each including a ten-minute break. Participants can observe actual work between sessions and use those findings in the second session.

For single-day delivery, practical exercises use a company workflow and examples prepared in advance. The day includes two three-hour learning blocks with short breaks, plus a lunch break. Participants can gather observations and test their drafts after training; scenario exercises during the day do not establish live performance results.

A 45-minute follow-up reviews application of the learning and questions arising from use. It is normally planned around 30 days after training and aligned with any company trial. Timing and preparation are agreed before booking.

Each participant should allow six hours for the learning blocks, plus preparation and observation. For single-day delivery, allow additional time for lunch. Follow-up attendance is agreed with your company. Any trial or implementation activity requires additional company time and approval.

Choosing training or consulting

Choose training when you want people in your company to learn methods and tools they can use to improve processes. If you need Acumen to develop finished documentation, discuss Workflow Design and SOP Development. For a broader redesign or implementation engagement, consider Process Optimization.

If the underlying constraint is still uncertain, the Business Scaling and Operations Diagnostic may be a better starting point. We confirm the appropriate route before booking.
